SNAP, Medicaid & CHIP: Questions Clinics Hear Most

Plain answers to the questions families ask at Texas community clinics — plus a local guide for every county in our directory.

SNAP (food stamps) questions

Can a clinic help me apply for SNAP in Texas?

Yes. Many community clinics have staff or navigators who help you fill out the SNAP application on YourTexasBenefits.com, check your documents, and get ready for the phone interview. The help is free.

What should I bring to my clinic visit for a SNAP application?

Bring a photo ID, proof of income for everyone in your home (pay stubs or a letter from your job), proof of rent and utility bills, and Social Security numbers for people applying. If you don't have something, bring what you have — staff can tell you what's still needed.

Is there a faster SNAP option if I have almost no money?

Yes. Texas offers emergency (expedited) SNAP within about 7 days for households with very low income and cash, or whose rent and utilities cost more than their income. Ask clinic staff or call 2-1-1 and choose option 2.

Can I apply for SNAP, Medicaid and CHIP at the same time?

Yes. One Texas application covers SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP and TANF. A clinic navigator can help you pick every program your family may qualify for on the same form.

Medicaid questions

Can I see a clinic doctor while my Medicaid application is pending?

Usually yes. Community health centers see patients on a sliding fee scale based on income, and some care may be covered later if your Medicaid is approved and backdated.

Who can get Medicaid in Texas?

Texas Medicaid mainly covers children, pregnant women, some parents and caretakers with very low income, older adults, and people with disabilities. Most adults without children do not qualify unless they have a disability.

I'm pregnant. How fast can I get coverage?

Pregnant women can often get short-term coverage quickly while the full application is reviewed. Ask your clinic about pregnancy Medicaid as soon as you know you're pregnant.

Do I have to renew Medicaid?

Yes. Texas reviews Medicaid regularly. Watch your mail and YourTexasBenefits.com account for renewal notices and answer by the due date so your coverage doesn't stop. A clinic navigator can help you renew.

CHIP questions

What's the difference between CHIP and children's Medicaid?

Both give kids health coverage. Children's Medicaid is for families with lower income; CHIP is for families who earn a little too much for Medicaid but can't afford private insurance. You use the same application for both.

How much does CHIP cost?

Many families pay nothing. Others pay a small yearly enrollment fee of up to $50 per family, depending on income, plus small copays for some visits.

Can my child keep seeing our clinic on CHIP?

Most community clinics accept CHIP health plans. When you enroll, pick a health plan that includes your clinic, or ask the clinic which plans they take.

Does applying for CHIP affect my immigration status?

Getting CHIP or Medicaid for your children is generally not counted against you under public charge rules. If you're worried, ask a legal aid organization before you apply.
