Substance use affects families everywhere in Texas — in cities and in rural counties where treatment can feel far away or out of reach. You don't have to figure it out alone, and you don't need insurance to get started.

Texas Health Help is a community nonprofit. We don't provide treatment directly, but we help you understand your options and connect to trusted, often free or low-cost treatment and support resources across Texas.

You don't need to be ready for treatment to call. Helplines are there to answer questions, no matter where you are in the process. A Texas Health Help navigator will confirm what's current and available near you — free and confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions

What number can I call for free, confidential substance abuse help?+

Call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 (1-800-662-HELP), free and confidential, 24/7/365 in English and Spanish. For a mental health or suicide crisis, call or text 988.

Does Texas Health Help provide addiction treatment?+

No. We are a community nonprofit, not a treatment provider. We help you understand your options and connect you to Texas HHSC-funded treatment programs, Local Mental Health Authorities, and other trusted resources — for free.

What if I don't have insurance? Can I still get treatment?+

Yes. Texas HHSC funds substance use treatment — including withdrawal management, residential treatment, outpatient treatment, and medication-assisted treatment — for people who are uninsured or underinsured, based on availability and need.

I'm worried about a family member, not myself. What can I do?+

The SAMHSA National Helpline and your Local Mental Health Authority can both help family members find guidance, support groups, and treatment referrals for a loved one — you don't have to be the one in treatment to call.

Will reaching out affect my custody of my children?+

Asking for help with substance use is not the same as a CPS report, and getting treatment is often the strongest step a parent can take to keep their family safely together. A navigator can talk through your specific concerns confidentially.

Is this covered if I have Medicaid?+

Texas Medicaid covers many substance use disorder services. A Texas Health Help navigator can help you understand what's covered under your specific plan and connect you to a provider that accepts it.
