The Problem No One's Talking About

Sarah is 74 years old. She lives in San Jacinto County with her daughter's family. Three months ago, her doctor recommended she see a cardiologist in Houston—45 minutes away.

She didn't go.

Not because she didn't want to. Not because she couldn't afford it. Sarah didn't go because she couldn't get there.

Her daughter works full time. The bus service runs unreliably. A taxi would cost $100+ each way. Sarah made the decision millions of rural Americans make every day: skip the appointment.

This Isn't Just Sarah's Story. It's a Rural Health Crisis.

Transportation is one of the biggest—but least discussed—barriers to healthcare in rural Texas. When you live in a county without a major hospital, a specialist visit isn't just a doctor's appointment. It's a logistical puzzle that requires:

  • Reliable transportation (often missing in rural areas)
  • Time off work (for the patient or their caregiver)
  • Money for gas or fares (on a fixed income, this adds up fast)
  • Someone to accompany you (important for seniors, but hard to arrange)

When any one of those pieces is missing, the appointment gets postponed. Then canceled. Then forgotten.

The Consequences of Missing Care

Skipping one appointment might seem minor. But for seniors managing chronic conditions, missed appointments lead to:

  • Worsening health conditions that become emergencies
  • More expensive treatments later, like ER visits or hospitalizations
  • A shorter, lower-quality life

According to research, nearly 4 million Americans miss or delay medical care each year because of transportation issues. Rural seniors are hit hardest.
