What is a health navigator?
A health navigator is a trained person who helps you find, afford, and actually get to healthcare. They sit on your side of the table: screening you for coverage, translating the paperwork, calling clinics with you, and following up until you're connected. Navigators don't sell insurance and don't decide who qualifies — they make sure nothing you're entitled to slips past you.
In Texas the role goes by several names, and the distinctions matter when you're deciding who to call:
Healthcare navigator
Helps you understand and enroll in coverage — Medicaid, CHIP, or a marketplace plan — and find care you can afford. Free, and not tied to any insurance company.
Patient navigator
Walks alongside you through a specific care journey — a diagnosis, a pregnancy, a chronic condition — coordinating appointments, records, and follow-up.
Community health worker (CHW)
A trusted local resident, often certified in Texas, who bridges the gap between neighbors and the health system with outreach and education.
Insurance broker
Sells plans and is paid a commission by insurers. Useful for some shoppers, but a navigator's help is free and carries no sales incentive.
What does a health navigator do?
Day to day, navigation is unglamorous, practical work. Here's what a navigator handles for Texas families:
- Explains your coverage options — Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare, marketplace plans, or sliding-scale care if you have none
- Helps you complete and submit benefit applications, then follows up when the state asks for more paperwork
- Finds a clinic, dentist, OB, or behavioral health provider that accepts your coverage and is close enough to reach
- Books or prepares you for appointments, including what to bring and what to ask
- Arranges transportation, including free Medicaid rides for covered visits
- Connects you to food, prescription, housing, and caregiver support when health isn't the only problem
